Technology

WEXs platform technology is built upon Tetrodotoxin (also referred to as TTX), a non-peptide neurotoxin found in the puffer fish and other marine animals. TTX is known to block the voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) found on nerves which conduct pain impulses. There are changes to this subset of VGSCs in chronic pain conditions. Tetrodotoxin is extremely potent, and much lower dosages are needed to produce an analgesic effect than with other drugs.

Programs

Product Development

A Phase III clinical trial of TTX for the treatment of cancer pain is ongoing. This clinical trial (TEC-006) is a multicentre, randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial comparing the efficacy and safety of TTX to placebo in approximately 120 patients with moderate to severe inadequately controlled cancer-related pain.

A Phase II clinical trial of TTX in chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain is expected to start in late 2010.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Bin Huang, President and Chief Executive Officer: Dr. Huang joined the company in November 2007. Her previous experience includes 2 years as CEO of GeneHarbour Technologies (Hong Kong) and 5 years as President and CEO of Cytovax Biotechnologies Inc. in Canada. Additionally, she served as Vice President of Business Development at Monsanto Canada, and was biotech analyst and partner at GMP Securities. Dr. Huang received her PhD in cell biology from the University of East Anglia, UK, and her MBA from the University of Toronto.
