Management Team
Thomas G. Wellner, Bsc. (Hons) Life Sciences Queen's, President and CEO, joined the company in April 2008 following a 20 year Global Pharmaceutical career at Eli Lilly & Co where he held a variety of key marketing, sales and General Management positions. Mr. Wellner spent the last 10 years of his career working in Europe, first as head of marketing & sales based in the UK and then as President and General Manager of Lilly Germany the companies 3rd largest P&L. Mr. Wellner has also worked in USA, China and most of Latin America.
David N. Bell, M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice President of Drug Development and Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Bell was Group Leader of Cancer Biology at BioChem Therapeutic, Inc. in Laval, Quebec. Prior thereto, Dr. Bell was Laboratory Director of the BioVentures Division of FAA in Worcester, Massachussetts, USA. Dr. Bell received his Ph.D. from the Department of Medicine of McGill University in 1988 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the McGill Cancer Centre. Dr. Bell's prime responsibility at Therapure Biopharma has been the development of a pipeline of new product candidates for the treatment of anemia, cancer and infectious diseases.
Dirk Alkema, B.Sc., Ph.D. (Biochemistry), Vice President, Operations. Dr. Alkema secured his doctorate in biochemistry from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and subsequently joined Connaught Laboratories Ltd. where he held a number of production management positions until 1989 when he was appointed Director, Viral Vaccine Manufacturing Division. During his tenure at Connaught Dr. Alkema managed the plasma fractionation facility that serviced the Canadian market. In 1992 he joined Langford, a division of Cyanamid Canada as Director, Vaccine Manufacturing. Dr. Alkema is responsible for overseeing Therapure Biopharma's commercial manufacturing activities.
Brian Fielding, B.Com, CA
VP Finance and Chief Financial Officer.
Brian joined Therapure Biopharma in March 2010. Brian brings more than 20 years of senior financial and operational management in the life sciences industry to Therapure Biopharma having held CEO, COO and CFO positions in a broad portfolio of public and private therapeutic, medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing and consulting organizations. Brian has an extensive background in strategic planning, operational restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and financings. At Therapure Brian will have responsibility for all financial functions as well as Information Technology.
Prior to joining Therapure Brian was COO and CFO at PharmEng International Inc., CEO and CFO at Z-Tech (Canada) Inc., CEO and CFO at Millenium Biologix Corp., CFO at Cita NeuroPharmaceuticals Inc., CFO at GlycoDesign Inc. and Vice President Finance at Connaught Laboratories Limited. Brian is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto.

Tom is a seasoned Pharmaceutical Executive who recently left Eli Lilly where he had a very successful career that spanned 20 years to take on the role of President and CEO of Therapure Biopharma, a privately held biopharmaceutical business owned by Catalyst Capital fund II and management based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. www.therapurebio.com. Tom's mandate is to build a business from a collection of assets. Therapure's strategic focus is to become a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) for Mammalian sourced Biologics. Therapure BioPharma also has an internal drug development pipeline built upon hemoglobin as a drug carrier as well as a number of external development partnerships. Therapure is successfully expanding operations and achieving its business milestones.
Tom started his career at Eli Lilly & Co. in May 1987 in sales at Lilly Canada. He was then promoted through a series of International development assignments which included series of leadership challenges.
Tom has worked on every continent except one. Tom designed and set up the re-entry for Lilly into the Chinese market in the early 1990's, which culminated in him staying on in an operational post as the original Lilly China marketing manager. After Tom's Asian experience he decided to return to Canada as Marketing Director for Lilly Canada.
Tom has spent a significant amount of his career working to develop marketing skills and competencies. In 2000 he and his family moved to London, England to be the Chief Marketing and Sales Officer for Lilly European Operations reporting to the President Lilly European Operations.
In October of 2004 Tom took over the Leadership of Lilly's third largest business as CEO and General Manager of Lilly Deutschland GmbH based in Bad Homburg Germany. This business is still doing very well and exceeded its operational targets for both sales and profit. During Tom's tenure there were approx. 1200 employees and the annual revenues were approx. $ 700 Million.
In October of 2007, Tom and his family returned to Canada to allow his children an opportunity to benefit from a Canadian experience.
Tom served on the editorial committee for Pharmaceutical Marketing Europe and has led business cases at Insead and HBS. He also enjoys entrepreneurial activities and is an Owner/Advisor/Board Member of a small Canadian on-line billing software company called "Freshbooks Inc.". He also sits on the boards of Atlantic Healthcare, a speciality Pharmaceutical Company based in the UK; DiaMedica, a diabetes company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba; as well as Induce Biologics a bone growth company based in Toronto, Ontario. Tom is an avid sportsman who loves skiing, tennis, soccer and running.
