TheraCarb Inc.

Presenter: Mark Redmond, Chief Executive Officer

Company Information

Company Type: Immunology/Infectiology

Development Stage: Private

Company Profile

TheraCarb Inc. is a private, early-stage biopharmaceutical company developing carbohydrate-based vaccines and therapeutic drug platform-technologies. TheraCarb's lead products are vaccines against the fungal infections caused by Candida and Aspergillus.

Company Strategy

TheraCarb is focused on pre-clinical and Phase I/II clinical studies and forming partnerships for developing late-stage products and marketing.

Intellectual Property

TheraCarb's intellectual property portfolio of seven patent families is developed around technology conceived at the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Carbohydrate Chemistry (AICCS). The base of technology was broadened with the Memorandum of Understanding dated April 1, 2008 (the 2008 MOU) between TheraCarb and the AICCS Universities of the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary that grants TheraCarb the Right to First Offer on all technology originating at AICCS in the fields of infectious disease and neurodegenerative disease.

The 2008 MOU provides TheraCarb with a source of technology to develop, manage, and to partner to ensure that AICCS is commercialised.

Programs

TheraCarb is developing products based on three core technologies:

1. Synthetic carbohydrate vaccines
2. Bioengineered glycoconjugated vaccines
3. PolyBAIT absorbent therapeutics

Synthetic Carbohydrate Vaccines

There is no approved vaccine against Candida. The fungus has defied the use of conventional vaccine technology to produce a killed, attenuated, or sub-unit vaccine.

TheraCarb's approach is to develop a glyco-conjugated polymeric nanoparticle vaccine against Candida by combining synthetic carbohydrate chemistry developed at the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Carbohydrate Science (AICCS) with proprietary nanoparticle vaccine technology. We will use our expertise in vaccine development and experience in commercializing biotechnology to complete pre-clinical studies in preparation of filing an Investigational New Drug (IND) application and starting Phase 1 clinical trials.

If successful results are obtained through this project, TheraCarb will expand the nanoparticle vaccine platform to include the development of prophylactic treatments against other pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus.

Bioengineered glycoconjugated vaccines

Conjugated vaccines provide protection against a growing range of life- threatening bacterial infections. TheraCarb has developed a proprietary platform technology that allows the engineering of new types of conjugate vaccine, glyco-conjugates in-vivo.

With this platform, TheraCarb can develop and produce immunogenic glycoproteins in a simplified biological process that circumvents many of the difficulties involved in current methods.

The lead conjugate vaccine in development is against Pneumococcus. Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Pneumococcal disease can lead to serious infections of the lungs (pneumonia), blood (bacteremia), and brain (meningitis). In infected people, pneumococcal pneumonia kills about 1 out of 20, bacteremia kills about 1 person out of 5, and meningitis about 3 people out of 10.

The need and the market for pneumoccal vaccines is significant and the value of the Pneumoccocal market is estimated to be >US$3 billion.

PolyBAIT absorbent technologies

The objective of the PolyBAIT R&D program is to produce a pharmaceutically acceptable drug capable of effectively binding and neutralizing E.coli 0157/Shiga toxins to prevent the progression to hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in individuals infected with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Investors

We are seeking investment partners to complete a $5-10M Series A financing.

The Alberta government has committed >$1.3M in non-dilutive grants; we have Canadian investment partners agreed to an investment.

We are looking to fill the offering before the start of summer 2010.
