Company Profile

Sernova Corp is focused in the cell therapy arena with two platform technologies. The first is the Cell Pouch System(tm), which is a device, when implanted under the skin incorporates with tissue and microvessels to support therapeutic cell therapies. The second is Sertolin(tm), a technology which provides an immune-privileged local environment for therapeutic cells which may reduce or eliminate the need for immunosuppression agents. Sernova may treat chronic metabolic, neurological, and hematologic diseases and is currently focused on treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes.

Company Strategy

The company strategy involves development of the Cell Pouch, a polymer-based device which becomes an organ-like structure when placed under the skin for therapeutic cell delivery. While the company is currently focused on preparing for clinical development of the device for insulin-dependent diabetes through islet transplantation, the company plans to expand the use of the device to other chronic metabolic, neurological and hematological diseases through academic and corporate collaborations.

Intellectual Property

The company has multiple patents and patent applications (>21) involving cellular implantation devices and cell-based technologies to protect therapeutic cells from attack by the immune system.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Philip Toleikis, with graduate degrees from the University of Michigan and University of British Columbia has been President and CEO of Sernova Corp. since April 2009. Dr. Toleikis is an experienced biotechnology executive, with over 20 years of research, intellectual property, product development, management and business experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Some of this experience has come from his 10 year tenure at Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. which began in 1996 where his major achievements include building and managing a successful product development team of over 20 scientists, development and implementation of product development strategies for multiple combination products and a co-inventor of key patent applications and patents in the drug-device arena. More recently prior to joining Sernova, he served as consultant to multiple pharmaceutical, device, and combination product companies.
