Induce Biologics Inc was founded in 2008 by Drs Sean Peel & Cameron Clokie to create components, technology and know-how to produce effective and affordable growth factor containing bioimplants for skeletal regeneration. Induce utilizes novel technologies that enhance the manufacturing and delivery of recombinant growth factors from bioimplants which can be used to induce the body to regenerate damaged or lost tissue.

Over 2.2 million bone graft surgeries were performed worldwide in 2005. The current industry standard for bone grafting is autograft, where bone is taken from one part of the patient's body and transplanted into the graft site. However numerous complications are associated with bone autografts. Sales of alternates to autografts, termed orthobiologics, reached $2.7 billion in 2008 and are predicted to grow at over 9% annually.

A new type of orthobiologic are bioimplants that incorporate growth factors. These possess inherent biological activity and their efficacy can be equivalent to autograft. Bioimplants containing recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (rhBMP) 2 or 7 are approved for various bone graft procedures. Sales of BMP bioimplants approached 1 billion in 2008. However BMP bioimplants are very expensive, due to the high cost of manufacturing rhBMPs and the need to use large amounts due to inefficient delivery, which has greatly limited their sales, especially outside the US.

Induce Biologics' technologies address these limitations by increasing the cost effectiveness of rhBMP manufacturing, improving BMP delivery and reducing the amount of BMP required in a bioimplant. These improvements potentially will result in a more affordable bioimplant that will be used worldwide.

Currently Induce Biologics is working with Therapure Biopharma Inc to manufacture rhBMP on a commercial scale and will initiate animal studies with this rhBMP later this year.

Intellectual Property

Induce Biologics holds patents related to methods for enhanced manufacturing of recombinant proteins, methods for improving delivery of growth factors from implants and for the use of poloxamers with growth factors for increased bone regeneration.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Peel obtained his PhD in Oral Biology (Biomaterials) from the University of Toronto and then conducted postdoctoral research in tissue engineering. He then moved to industry where he has worked with GenSci Regeneration Sciences (tissue based devices), Osteopharm Inc (therapeutics and diagnostics) and in 2008 co-founded Induce Biologics Inc with Dr. Cameron Clokie.
Dr. Peel is also an adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto and Scientific Associate Staff in Research at Mount Sinai Hospital. He has authored 22 papers, 4 book chapters and is an inventor on 4 patents.
