SpectraDigital Corporation

Presenter: Bruce Carrick, Chief Operating Officer

The Company

SpectraDigital Corporation (SDC) is a life sciences company whose mandate is to improve the drug selection process. SDC’s focus is developing diagnostic, screening and informatic solutions that utilize its patent-pending optical spectroscopy technology platform. This non-invasive technology has the benefit of being extremely fast in comparison to other systems. It also requires minimal sample preparation time. Additionally, information obtained using proprietary algorithms may provide unique insights into mode of actions or physiological characteristics of the cells of interest.

The Market Opportunity

The proliferation of medications has resulted in the need for tools to assist with selection of the most appropriate treatments / regimens. Additionally, the need for tools to aid in drug discovery and pathogen screening is also growing. SDC’s 2009 projected market opportunity is $1.6 billion:
• In the $1.75 billion HIV diagnostics market, resistance testing estimated to be $600 million
• In the $7.4 billion cancer diagnostics market, sensitivity testing estimated to be $100 million
• In the $10 billion high-speed screening market, pathogen screening estimated to be $900 million

Product Pipeline

SDC is focused on the commercialization of three major product lines, which are in various stages of development. The business model is to provide an automated testing device that transfers data to a hosted server for data analysis. By maintaining centralized control of the information, a database can be mined for trends and other bioinformatics:

HIV SpectraPointTM is being developed as a simple, fast and portable alternative to current methods -- phenotyping and genotyping – which have limitations (speed, complexity, interpretation). HIV SpectraPoint is an HIV antiviral resistance / efficacy testing device which is currently undergoing clinical and laboratory testing in Canada and the United States.
SDC OncoPointTM is being developed to meet the needs of patients resuming chemotherapy, since in some instances, resistance will have occurred. SDC OncoPoint is a solution to determine the most efficacious chemotherapy regimen among cancer patients. This product is undergoing pre-clinical testing.
SDC CellScreen is being developed in response to the need for fast methods to determine the presence of viruses and other pathogens at very early stages of infection. The device will provide high throughput screening for known viruses or other characteristics within biological samples. This product is currently undergoing internal testing.

Presenter Biography

Bruce Carrick is Chief Operating Officer at SpectraDigital Corporation. A graduate of the biology department of the University of Guelph, Mr. Carrick started his scientific career working in laboratories at Guelph and Carleton Universities. After obtaining his MBA from McMaster University, he developed market strategies for inventors and entrepreneurs at the Canadian Industrial Innovation Centre. Following this, he conducted research for pharmaceutical and biomedical companies at Angus Reid Group (now Ipsos-Reid). Prior to joining SpectraDigital, Mr. Carrick worked for CCC Information Services, one of the largest software developers in Chicago. This included a stint at a “dot-com” spin-off, which was eventually folded back into the parent company. Once at SpectraDigital, Mr. Carrick resumed his fifteen-year collaboration with Dr. Satish Deshpande, SpectraDigital’s President and Chief Scientist.
