Rimon Therapeutics Ltd.
Presenter: Dr. Michael May, President & CEO
Company Profile
Rimon Therapeutics Ltd. is a privately-held, biotechnology company based in Toronto, Ontario. It was spun from research being done at the University of Toronto, with the observation of blood vessels growing around an implant.
Initial financing came from the Ontario Centres of Excellence, through the Martin Walmsley Fellowship. A second round of private financing allowed the Company to move to a larger facility in the heart of Toronto’s biotech sector. Rimon has entered into discussions with some of the world’s largest medical device companies.
Science and Technology
Rimon is developing synthetic, therapeutic polymers, known as TheramersTM, that combine bioactivity with a broad range of mechanical and physical properties. Having been designated as devices by the USFDA, TheramersTM benefit from the shortened timelines required to bring a product to market compared with those of for pharmaceutical products.
Exploited as solids, TheramersTM deliver localized treatment without any systemic consequences. Their therapeutic applications include inducing the development of new blood vessels, preventing the destruction of tissue, killing bacteria without harming human cells, healing chronic wounds, treating heart disease, delaying knee replacement, and preventing medical device-related infections.
Rimon’s primary product, the MI-SorbTM dressing, has entered its first clinical trial and is showing promising, preliminary data. MI-SorbTM is used for the treatment of chronic wounds and works by reducing the activity of the high MMP concentrations that “chew apart” chronic wounds faster than they can heal. It can be applied to wounds dry, to provide absorptive capacity for exudating wounds, or can be pre-soaked to support moist wound healing.
Portfolio of TheramersTM
MI TheramerTM – reduces the activity of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs)
Angiogenic TheramerTM – induces new blood vessel development (angiogenesis)
AM TheramerTM – destroys gram positive and negative bacteria without harming human cells
