Company Profile
Nephrologix Inc. is a private company that develops, manufactures and markets innovative peritoneal dialysis (PD) systems.
Our primary product, SmartPDTM, is designed to provide nephrologists with improved control on how PD treatment is prescribed and delivered, and to provide patients with superior care for End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) in their own home. We do this by automating and then integrating standard clinically validated treatment protocols into a small, portable and easy to use APD machine. Thus SmartPDTM ushers the era of diagnostic PD for the nephrologists and physiological PD for the patients. With SmartPDTM, treatment adequacy of PD can now be objectively substantiated without any changes in clinical work flow and procedures.
These innovations in PD treatment result from over 25 years of experience in the field by Joseph Dadson, Sr., Nephrologix founder and chief scientific officer.
In effect, Nephrologix has made an evolutionary leap in the treatment of ESRF, a life threatening and incurable illness affecting 1.8 million people today, a number projected to double within ten years. Nephrologix has developed the first diagnostic automated peritoneal dialysis system, Smart PDTM, which collects and uses real-time patient and system data to regulate the dialysis operation. The resulting dialysis is more physiological and surpasses the clinical and technical limitations of current APD machines. It is positioned not only to improve patient outcomes, but also to reduce dialysis costs.
In end stage renal failure (ESRF), when the kidneys no longer effectively filter waste products and excess fluid from the body, death within weeks or months is the outcome unless patients receive one of three treatments: peritoneal dialysis (PD), hemodialysis (HD), or kidney transplant. Transplants are an option only for a small minority of patients. Dialysis is an artificial means of removing waste by-products and fluids. HD circulates the blood outside the body where it is cleansed by passing through a filter system. PD uses the abdominal membrane as a natural filter system, and thereby accomplishes dialysis inside the body.
HD, the first type of dialysis ever developed, is the more commonly administered treatment, yet as practiced today is complex, costly, and physiological incompatible with the body’s natural cleansing rhythm. HD is almost entirely performed in hospitals or clinics to accommodate the required equipment and medical staff. PD is physiologically more compatible with the body’s natural cleansing rhythm, less complex, less capital intensive and therefore more cost effective, while also being more convenient as it is predominately performed in the home. Until now, technical limitations of standard APD machines, which have not seen significant innovation since the early 90s, have limited the penetration of PD in North America. Although only 11% of ESRF patients worldwide currently receive peritoneal dialysis, PD prevalence has surpassed 80% and 90% in Hong Kong and Mexico respectively.
SmartPDTM overcomes current PD technical and clinical shortcomings, positioning Nephrologix not only to gain market share in the current PD market, but also to sustainably increase PD’s overall acceptance. SmartPDTM introduces three major advances: (1) the first online, portable, integrated system incorporating full patient data management capability to regulate the delivery of dialysis more physiologically; (2) specially designed connectors raise safety and ergonomics to new levels to eliminate the risk of contamination associated with the direct human contact required by current, unspecialized connector mechanisms; (3) point-of-use formulation of biocompatible dialysis solution to improve comfort and reduce formation of harmful glucose by-products of dialysis, while also reducing storage and logistics costs.
