DNA Genotek Inc.

Presenter: Ian Curry, President & CEO

Company Overview

DNA Genotek is an Ottawa-based biotechnology company focused on developing innovations to improve genetic health research through improved DNA collection. The company’s main product, the OrageneTM DNA Self-Collection Kit, provides researchers with the easiest, cost-effective way to collect and preserve large amounts of DNA. Due to its ease-of-use, the product has been adopted by thousands of researchers and clinicians worldwide to assist in the advancement of their genetic findings. DNA Genotek was the only Canadian company selected by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer for 2006.

DNA Genotek was founded in 1998 with an initial emphasis on research. In 2003, the company developed its Oragene product. Over the past 30 months, the company has productized and aggressively marketed Oragene, experiencing over 1400% growth in trailing 12-month revenue over the last 8 quarters. The product’s effectiveness and ease-of-use have resulted in rapid adoption by thousands of health researchers and clinicians worldwide. Customers include: Quest Diagnostics (the largest clinical laboratory company in the US), Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge and the Karolinska Institute.

Many new advances in health care are based on genetic research findings. All genetic research hinges on large quantities of one essential resource – DNA. The increasingly granular understanding of our genetic makeup is resulting in substantial impacts on the way disease is prevented, diagnosed and treated. These findings have the potential to revolutionize health care and patient care on a global scale.

With an aim at contributing to advances in genetic research and diagnostics, DNA Genotek focused on improving DNA collection. With Oragene, a donor simply spits into our patented plastic collection device. When the donor closes the lid on the device, their saliva is mixed with a proprietary chemical solution that preserves DNA until it is extracted and analyzed.

While many large biotech companies focus on technologies for the downstream DNA isolation or analysis, no other company is focused exclusively and specifically on enabling DNA collection – that vital first step in the entire DNA value chain. Traditionally, blood has been regarded as the de facto sample type. The extraction, processing and storage of blood in and of itself presents numerous, significant challenges for patients, researchers and clinicians. Hence, Oragene is an enabling technology that benefits all parties by allowing simple, cost-effective, and painless collection of DNA samples.

The end goal for the majority of DNA research projects is to develop genetic tests. These tests can be used to either determine an individual’s predisposition to a certain disease (referred to as “predictive medicine”) or, if an individual already has a disease, to determine which type of drug could be best used to combat the disease given that individual’s genetic makeup (referred to as “pharmacogenomics”). All of this research and analysis starts with the collection of a high quality DNA sample.

Oragene also offers substantial benefits for hospitals and genetic reference labs by increasing efficiency and reducing costs. In addition, patient care is improved when patients are offered single-visit, completely non-invasive sample collection. Finally, compared to blood and other sources of DNA, Oragene samples are more cost-effective and efficient to process and analyze in the lab.

Presenter Biography

Mr. Curry joined DNA Genotek in February 2004. To date, his leadership has enabled the organization to achieve substantial growth. Over the past 30 months, the company has productized and aggressively marketed its products, resulting in over 1400% growth in trailing 12-month revenue over the last 8 quarters.

Previously, Mr. Curry was an executive of Entrust, Inc. He joined that company in its startup phase and played an instrumental role in creating a new market, ultimately growing Entrust to a global leader in Internet security software with over $200 million ($Cdn) in revenue in 2000. He participated directly in Entrust’s IPO ($120 million ($US)) and a secondary offering ($700 million ($US)).

In January 2006, Mr. Curry attended the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. He holds a Master’s in Science (Management) from MIT and a Bachelor of Science from The University of Western Ontario.
