Company Profile

AdipoGenix, Inc. is a Toronto and Boston-based biopharmaceutical company developing small molecule pharmaceuticals to treat obesity, type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders. The pharmacologic target for our drug discovery programs is human fat. Our core assets and competencies include a proprietary and diverse collection of human fat cell precursors (preadipocytes) from both subcutaneous and visceral human fat depots, a high-throughput discovery technology for differentiating these precursor cells to form mature human fat cells and identifying compounds that reduce fat content of human fat cells, a portfolio of assays and pharmacological tools to identify the mechanism of action and molecular targets for active compounds identified, and proprietary lead compounds. Through this unique human fat cell-based discovery technology, we have identified nontoxic cellular-active small molecule compounds that:
1) Reduce the number of mature fat cells formed from precursor cells,
2) Decrease the synthesis and storage of fat in mature fat cells,
3) Increase the breakdown and release of stored fat, and
4) Enhance the “burning” of stored fat to produce energy.

The Company’s approach has been validated through 1) identification of cellular-active lead candidates from its own compound collection; 2) demonstration that these leads produce beneficial in vivo effects on weight and body fat content and on plasma glucose, insulin and triglyceride levels in a diet induced obesity/hyperglycemia animal model; 3) the Company’s product discovery, development and commercialization partnership with the major pharmaceutical company, Johnson & Johnson, which has produced cellular-actives currently under evaluation; 4) successful drug API single agent screen in collaboration with CombinatoRx; 5) successful medicinal plant natural products screen in collaboration with Unigen Pharmaceuticals and 6) the award of numerous competitively peer-reviewed grants.

To date AdipoGenix has raised over $5.5 million from corporate partnerships and grants, and approximately $1M of seed round equity capital. We are undertaking a Series A financing to achieve the following milestones:
1) Advance one (or more) of the Company’s current proprietary lead compounds through phase 1 and a novel drug API combination through phase 2a human clinical trials (targeting the indication of obesity and/or type 2 diabetes),
2) Commercialize new weight control products into the ~ $80 billion OTC personal healthcare market (Burrill and Company estimate) and,
3) Expand the Johnson & Johnson alliance or engage one additional pharmaceutical company as a discovery stage partner.
